Ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, Pakistan has issued visas to all the Indian reporters who had applied for them. This step Pakistan undertook is in a bid to improve the relations between both nations through sports.
The 2025 Champions Trophy commences on February 19 with Pakistan taking on New Zealand for the opening match. India’s unwillingness to travel for the competition prompted the tournament to switch to a hybrid model. Pakistan, now fully prepared to host an ICC event after twenty years, remodeled its stadiums and facilities to meet ICC standards.
Pakistan Confirms Entry of Indian Journalists
The Indian cricket team did not go to Pakistan and chose to go to Dubai instead. However, the reporters are taking a different approach. According to sources from Cricket Pakistan, seven Indian reporters applied for visas to attend the tournament.
None of those applications were denied. Many experts, however, see this decision as a step towards greater collaboration between the two countries. Especially in sports given the bitter history between the two countries.

A Historic Return to Hosting
Pakistan is back on the world cricket stage with the ICC Champions Trophy set to begin this Wednesday at the National Stadium in Karachi. Pakistan has not hosted any major cricket tournaments for a long time now due to security issues. Those arose out of the attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore in 2009.
Pakistan banned international cricket for close to 10 years after this incident. Now the country hopes to regain its lost status in the cricketing world after completing this tournament. Moreover, it will give more chances to Pakistan to host other international tournaments.
Enhancing Media Relations
The permits given to Indian journalists are a positive stroke toward the improvement of media freedom. This is a step toward better relations between these two neighboring countries pouring over.
Political tensions between these two countries have historically restricted journalistic freedom. For instance, journalists from Pakistan received no visas when the Hockey World Cup was held in India in 2018. Thus, that prevented them from covering the World Cup.
On the other hand, Pakistani journalists who were attending the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup held in India suffered delays in getting the needed visas in time for them to cover the tournament. One in which the policy of Pakistan is more inclusive is the provision of visas to Indian media professionals. So, the two countries can view the issue of cooperation in a more positive light.
Implications for International Cricket
The hosting of the ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan, with the coverage from international media including Indian journalists, has immense significance for Pakistan’s cricketing future. It has the potential to pacify security doubts in Pakistan.
Also represents it as a possible location for other international cricketing events. In addition to this, it serves as a way for Pakistan to show its willingness to host teams and fans globally.
