The hype has just begun; fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar has put in a plea to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for a new PSL team.
Pindi Express, a name to represent the city that breathes cricket and the birthplace of Shoaib, Rawalpindi. This time, not in the grounds of the cricket field but on the main stage of the Pakistan Super League (PSL), the return of the Rawalpindi Express has been anticipated.
Why Does Shoaib Akhtar Want a Team for Rawalpindi?
In a recent interview, Akhtar spoke about the PSL season. “Cricket is in the air here, and the whole city lives and breathes it,” he said. Keeping in mind the number of talented cricket players Rawalpindi has produced over the years, he feels that Rawalpindi deserves to have a PSL team.
He suggested naming the team Pindi Express, as this is his hometown and possesses a long history in cricket. While it hosted numerous PSL games, Rawalpindi remains one of Pakistan’s most famous cricket-loving cities without a team of its own.
The Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium has a history of entertaining, including high-scoring matches packed with enthusiastic crowds. Akhtar, however, believes there is much more recognition owed to its representation.

A Bold Call from the Rawalpindi Express
His statement, “Ek Pindi Express hogi,” excited cricket experts and fans alike. “Pindi is full of rulers; it is of so much great talent,” he continued. Akhtar said that Rawalpindi boasts of a long list of fine fast bowlers, including Muhammad Wasim, Haris Rauf, and himself. In this proud history of cricket, he believes that making a team representative of the city stands to be well justified.
This concept aligns with the Pakistan Super League’s (PSL) consideration of growth. Salman Naseer, the PSL’s chief operating officer, recently hinted that the league may expand from six to eight teams by the following season.
There has been a lot of discussion regarding which new clubs might join after he told local media that “we could have two more teams by the end of this year.”
Broader Economic Implications
The impact of the reduction will not only be beneficial for the citizens but the overall economy. Reduced transport costs, lower goods and services prices, and household financial stress alleviation are to name a few. The step is an exception to the overall efforts of the government to preside over inflation control and elicit improved financial productivity in the economy.
Rawalpindi Leads the Race
Although Sialkot and Faisalabad are strong opponents, Rawalpindi has a stronger track record of hosting important games, and Shoaib Akhtar’s widespread appeal may give them the edge.
With the hashtag #PindiExpress, fans have already begun expressing their support on social media, pleading with the PCB to assist in realizing Akhtar’s goal.
Islamabad vs. Pindi?
In addition to completing the PSL map, adding a Rawalpindi team could set off an exciting new Twin City Derby between Islamabad United and Pindi Express. Given how close the cities are to one another and their shared history, this game has the potential to become one of the league’s most anticipated and talked-about events.
All Eyes on PCB: Will the Call be Answered?
Everyone is keeping a close eye on the PCB because PSL XI is quickly approaching. There is no doubt that when Shoaib Akhtar speaks, the cricket world listens, and Rawalpindi is ready to make a splash, whether or not the dream of witnessing the Pindi Express in action is realized.
Keep your fingers crossed for the PCB’s decision!
